Afghanistan: Home Based Schooling Program – Quality Education for Girls

The project aim is to provide a platform for Afghan girls, who are left behind the school closed doors to continue their education. The girls above sixth grade who remain out of school since the Taliban takeover on August 2021, will have a chance to continue their education in their villages under the program of Home based schooling and with a slogan of ‘No one leave behind’.

Introduction

Afghanistan saw major setbacks in the education sector in the year 2021 ranging from the Covid-19 pandemic to the drastic change in the system of governance. The two decades of war conducted by the US and its allied forces against the Taliban ended in August 2021 with the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan. The Afghan education sector has been severely affected under Taliban rule, and the progress made since 2001 is being lost (increase in the number of primary school students from 0.9 million to 9.2 million from 2001–2015; girls‘ share of enrollment from 0 to 39%). In the past twenty years of the Republic more women than ever were able to attend school, including schooling beyond 6th grade, and many women were able to obtain a college degree. Despite promises to open schools for women, the Taliban reversed course and ruled that it will not allow women to attend school beyond the 6th grade. For most teenage girls, it has been a year since they have been out of school.

Brief description of the project

At the moment, the program will be run as a pilot project in Bamyan province. The program will begin with close coordination of community elders and members because with their support, it is not possible to implement this project and achieve the desire objective of the program. We can find many professional teachers at the local level because during last 20 years many took the opportunity and finished their higher education, especially women and began their career as a school teacher in their villages and provinces. 100 girls attending 6th grade will receive quality education through the Home Based Schooling Program. There will be 100 girls student above 6th grade will be provided quality Education. There will have two locations, containing 50 students each. There will be two classes of 25 students with two teachers in each location. The classes will be six days a week and 4 hours a day.With close coordination of the local elders, two professional and talented female teachers will be hired for each location, which will be responsible to run the classes. The curriculum of the classes will be the school subjects and books but the main focus will be on scientific subjects like Chemistry, Physic, Biology and mathematics with English language. It will be kept in the mind that the two hired teacher will be professionals in the above mentioned subjects. The classroom location will be the teacher’s home or home of any other community member. The classrooms will be equipped with the required materials like whiteboard, marker and flip charts of needed. The students will be provided the required stationery with the books.
